Recycling Info

Did you know you can type the name of a waste item into Recycle Coach and it will tell you how to recycle or dispose of it in St. Louis County?!

Click HERE for Recycling Opportunities in Chesterfield, including a "What and Where to Recycle" guide.

Information on a variety of topics, including battery recycling, honeysuckle control, composting, and more may be found HERE on the Chesterfield Citizens Environmental Advisory Committee's webpage.

Here is a reference guide for what can (and can’t) be recycled in our area.

The number one recycling mistake is plastic bags! Plastic bags are not recyclable in your curbside recycling (take them to a grocery store or big box store) and your recyclables should be loose in your bin, NOT BAGGED! The bags tangle in the sorting equipment resulting in an average of 1 hour per day of stop-work time to untangle the equipment!

Recycling Myths:

Myth: Your recycling just gets mixed in with your trash.

Fact: Republic services has a facility in Hazelwood where your recyclables are sorted then returned to mills and manufacturers for reuse.

Myth: Anything with the chasing arrows can go in your recycling bin.

Fact: This symbol identifies the type of plastic an item is made from. It does NOT mean an item is recyclable.

Myth: Pizza boxes can be recycled.

Fact: The grease, cheese and stuck on food makes the cardboard no longer recyclable. It can also contaminate the other objects in the recycling bin and make it all unusable.

Myth: You should bag your recyclables.

Fact: Bags tangle in the sorting equipment. Recyclables should be placed loose in your recycling bin.

RECYCLE YOUR BEAUTY & WELLNESS PACKaGING

The beauty & wellness industries generate over 120 billion packages every year, with most ending up in landfills. The packaging is too small, too flexible, or made of too many materials to be traditionally recycled. PACT is a company that collects this hard-to-recycle packaging so it can be diverted from landfills and processed properly. Please see their website for what items they recycle, how to clean them, and where to drop them off (all Ulta and Sephora locations!)
